Iphone screen curtain6/13/2023 ![]() ![]() You could reasonably expect the screen curtain to help slightly with battery usage if it stops the graphics chip from doing a bit of work with the displaying of a movie but I would guess that this would be negligible compared to the brightness.Īnyway I would love someone else to try this. ![]() Keith if your assertion that the screen curtain acts like a short cut to turn down the brightness then you should expect to see the two run throughs with the screen curtain on be at a fairly similar level and the time with screen curtain off be be a higher drop in battery. I suspect you will find the following, very little difference in the battery drop for the two times where the brightness was up high and somewhat less drop where the brightness is low. Make sure you come back to your phone to check the battery level as the content finishes each time and of course completely recharge the phone in between times. Then play the video once with the brightness up high and the screen curtain on, once with the brightness still up high and the screen curtain off and once with the brightness low and the screen curtain on. Turn your phone to airplane mode so the radios of various types won't effect the results and turn off auto brightness. Pick a piece of content like a video so the screen won't lock. Seriously though, if anyone else can be bothered then do some experiments > it's just a placebo effect, hey whatever works. Just because the curtain is closed, doesn't mean the sun isn't shining. I like to give the example, the screen curtain is like a real curtain at a window in your home. ![]() If you really want to conserve battery, turn your screen brightness down to 0% if you have no use for seeing the screen. People who turn on the screen curtain to conserve battery, I think they are barking up the wrong tree so to speak. If you can see enough light, your screen will glow like a christmas tree. Now Go to settings/general/accessibility and turn on white on black. Turn your screen brightness to 100% in settings. > On Nov 6, 2011, at 3:30 PM, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Oh and by limiting the amount of current to the display you are saving battery life… What you have discovered is a method of passing some current to the display and not totally blanking it out. When I or my sighted wife look at a screen curtained display it is totally dark. By turning on the screen curtain you are effectively decreasing the amount of current that is being passed to the display. > Yep here goes one of those statements that you find lead into a disagreement > On Nov 7, 2011, at 6:38 AM, Keith Watson wrote: I have to assume the screen is being reduced to Zero I guess. In fact I jacked it to 100% and once I turned the screen curtain on, the screen was completely black or blank if you will. > I have to agree because I have held a light detector to the screen and there is absolutely no light being passed through. > On Nov 7, 2011, at 10:33 AM, Scott Howell wrote: At least on the Air apple seems to let you turn the brightness truly down to zero, they don't on IOS. The back light is on where the screen curtain is on or not but if I turn the screen brightness down to zero then the friendly glowing apple goes away. In fact I just had a look at the glowing apple on the back of my current model mac book air and they don't do it here either. I know more then a few tests should be done to back up a claim like this but really who could be bothered :)Īpple could certainly choose to have it that the power to the screen is reduced when the screen curtain is turned on but I really don't think they do. ![]() Having the screen curtain on or off didn't make an appreciable difference where turning the screen brightness right down made a significant difference to the drop in battery. Maybe this has changed under IOS 5, I haven't done the experiment but I ran some tests with my phone when running 4.x I completely charged the device and played the same 30 minute tv episode a few times over with different settings and of course complete charging between each playing of the episode. Turning on the screen curtain doesn't necessarily reduce the amount of power that is sent to the back light. ![]()
